Creative Connections Writing Retreats

Writing Retreats for Scholars Who Want More Than Productivity

Since 2014, I have been hosting writing retreats for scholars who want focused time to write, meaningful conversations about their work, and a deeper sense of connection to the lives they are building alongside their scholarship.

Academic life asks us to read, write, think, teach, mentor, publish, serve, and keep going. Yet few of us are given the time or space to ask a more basic question:

What conditions help us do our best intellectual and creative work?

The Creative Connections Writing Retreat is built around that question.

These retreats are not simply about getting away from campus so you can produce more pages. They are about creating the conditions that help academic writers think clearly, write deeply, reconnect with their purpose, and remember that scholarship is creative work.

Over the years, I have learned that sustained writing rarely happens through willpower alone. It happens when we protect our attention, step away from constant digital noise, spend time in nature, talk honestly about our work, and build rituals that allow our minds to settle. It also happens when we are surrounded by other scholars who understand both the difficulty and the beauty of the work.

The Four Elements of Creative Connections

The retreat is grounded in four practices that support creative academic writing:

1. Focused Writing Time

Each day includes protected writing blocks so participants can make real progress on the work that matters most. You arrive with a project. You leave having moved it forward.

2. Time Unplugged and in Nature

Creativity needs room. The retreat invites participants to step away from constant notifications, email, and institutional urgency and reconnect with the natural world. Walks, quiet, sunlight, water, mountains, trees, and spaciousness all become part of the writing process.

3. Conversations That Deepen the Work

Writing is often solitary, but scholarship is not. Through structured conversations, small groups, and informal connection, participants clarify their ideas, receive support, and remember that they are part of a larger intellectual community.

4. Meditation and Mindfulness

Mindfulness helps writers return to the page with more focus and less mental clutter. We use simple contemplative practices to support attention, reduce overwhelm, and create space for new ideas to emerge.

What Makes This Retreat Different

Many academic writing retreats focus only on output. Output matters. Pages matter. Deadlines matter. But pages emerge most sustainably when writers have the conditions they need to think, focus, rest, and reconnect with their purpose.

Creative Connections is designed for scholars who want to write with greater clarity and build a more meaningful academic life. The retreat combines structure and spaciousness: focused writing sessions, workshops, mindfulness practices, time outdoors, and conversations that help participants return to their work with renewed energy.

You do not have to arrive with a perfect plan or a polished project. You only need a project that matters to you and a willingness to give it sustained attention.

At the retreat, you will have time to:

  • Make meaningful progress on a writing project
  • Clarify your goals and priorities as a scholar
  • Strengthen your writing practice
  • Step away from digital distraction
  • Reconnect with your creativity
  • Spend time in nature
  • Build relationships with other scholars
  • Return home with a clearer plan for sustaining your work

Who This Retreat Is For

Creative Connections is for academic writers at many stages: graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, assistant professors, associate professors, full professors, independent scholars, and academic professionals working on books, articles, dissertations, essays, proposals, or other meaningful writing projects.

It is especially useful for scholars who are carrying ambitious projects and want protected time, thoughtful structure, and a supportive intellectual community.
