Ten Ways to Write When You Don’t Feel Like It
- Set the timer for fifteen minutes and promise yourself you will try for at least fifteen minutes.
- Look at all the writing tasks you have and pick the easiest one.
- Change location.
- Unplug the Internet.
- Turn of the screen and freewrite.
- Take a walk around the block.
- Call a friend and tell her you are going to start writing now, and ask her to call you in an hour to see if you did it.
- Post on Facebook that you are starting to write now and will report back in an hour.
- Arrange to meet a friend at a coffeeshop and write together.
- Write longhand instead of on the computer.
Hi Tanya,
ReplyDeletethanks for all the great advice! Regarding your idea to "unplug the internet", the problem is that it is very easy to plug it back on. Just wanted to share that I discovered recently a program called Freedom(http://macfreedom.com/). It blocks the internet for as long as you want (you can set it up for several hours), and to "undo" it, you have to restart your computer. I have been using it and love it, I can really focus on my writing a lot better. Anyway, I just thought this may help other people.
Thanks, Maria. Macfreedom is a great suggestion!! I have heard of it, but haven't tried it yet. 750words.com is another. It doesn't cut off the Internet, but provides a clean screen.
